FAQ: How can travel insurance help with red tide?

Red tide is a harmful algal bloom that sometimes occurs in the ocean water on the coast of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. It can be harmful to marine life and humans. Toxins can also be released into the air, leading to respiratory irritation, especially for people with respiratory conditions, such as asthma.

Generali travel insurance plans do not include red tide as a covered reason for trip cancellation. But there are instances when our plans can help. Here are the details:

  • Trips that are canceled because travelers do not wish to visit an area with red tide will not be reimbursed unless you purchased the Premium plan and added the Trip Cancellation for Any Reason coverage.
  • If you encounter red tide before your trip and become too sick to travel, your trip costs may be reimbursed.
  • Our plans may cover emergency medical treatment if a traveler becomes sick on their trip due to red tide. In this case, you may also be covered for Trip Interruption.
