Traveling to Chile: What Do You Need?

To travel legally to Chile, you'll need the right paperwork. Find out about passport and visa requirements below.

Passport

American citizens traveling to Chile need a passport that's valid for their entire stay. It's a good practice to ensure your passport is good for 6 months or more beyond your planned stay to be on the safe side.

You'll need at least one page free for an immigration entry stamp.

Visa

You won't need a visa to travel to Chile as a U.S. citizen if your stay is 90 days or less. This is considered a tourism stay, which only requires a passport. You will get a Tourist Card from immigration when you arrive. In some cases, you may be able to extend your stay by another 90 days without a visa requirement, but you have to go through the immigration office.

What Travel Protection Do You Need for Chile?

When you book a hotel or flight for your trip to Chile, you likely spend some time researching your options. You want to know that the accommodations are right for you — the right size bed, room amenities to make your trip more enjoyable and a safe location are common considerations.

When choosing travel protection for your Chile trip, you should also consider your needs and preferences. Here are some questions to help you choose a travel protection plan that's right for you.

How Much Coverage: Should You Get?

Consider how much the trip will cost and the chance you might have a covered event — one that interrupts, delays, or cancels the trip.

Most plans cover 100% of the insured cost if a trip is canceled — for instance with our plans, if you buy $10,000 worth of coverage, you can get up to $10,000 reimbursed after a covered event. However, Premium and Preferred plans may provide higher levels of coverage in other situations, and at Generali Global Assistance, you can also get options for Sporting Equipment coverage, pre-existing conditions, rental cars, and other additional circumstances.

When deciding how much travel protection to buy, consider factors such as:

  • How much the trip costs

  • What you're bringing with you

  • The likelihood of a covered event — such as inclement weather — during the time and in the location, you're traveling

How Much Are You Taking With You?

Consider what you're traveling with and how much. The more baggage you have, the more it might cost to replace items if they are lost. If you're taking a long trip to Chile with a lot of personal belongings — or expensive personal items — you may want to upgrade to higher Baggage coverage. Sporting equipment requires extra coverage, so make a list of what you plan to travel with so you can buy the right plan.

You may also want to consider how much you rely on your belongings and how quickly you need to replace them. If you can't wait a few days for baggage to show up and will need to replace personal items as quickly as possible, you may want good Baggage Delay coverage.

How Much Medical Coverage Do You Need?

Your state-side medical and dental plans usually won't cover claims in Chile, so you might want medical coverage that travels with you. Consider the likelihood of a medical event when planning for Chile.

Know that basic travel medical insurance doesn't always cover pre-existing conditions. You may need to purchase optional coverage or a Premium Plan.

Usually, higher premiums come with more financial coverage, so balance your travel protection budget with your risk tolerance when selecting a plan.

Do You Need Rental Car Protection?

Rental car protection helps cover damage to a rental car if there's an incident. Compare the costs of rental coverage through a travel protection provider and what the rental car agency might offer. You can also check with your credit card to see if it offers automatic coverage for any rental car you book and pay for with the card. Many travel credit cards have this perk (Rental Car protection not available for residents of Texas).

Would CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) Coverage Be Worth It to You?

If you think there’s a chance you might change your mind about traveling to Chile — due to shifting work schedules, personal reasons or natural events not listed in your plan —  Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage may be worth the investment.

This optional upgrade lets you cancel your trip for almost any reason and still receive partial reimbursement for your non-refundable costs as long as you meet the terms and conditions of the Plan. It’s a good option for travelers who want maximum flexibility and peace of mind. It does, however, come at an added cost (CFAR protection not available for residents of New York).

Chile Travel Tips

Chile is a favorite location for travelers seeking beauty and variety in their landscape as well as interesting culture and history. Here are some tips for making the most of your Chile travel adventure:

  • Pack for multiple climates. Chile stretches over 2,600 miles north to south and includes deserts, glaciers, shores and mountains, so weather conditions vary dramatically. Even in summer, Patagonia can be chilly — layers are your friend in Chile.

  • Carry cash for remote areas. While credit cards are widely accepted in major cities, businesses in small towns and rural areas may prefer cash. Bring Chilean pesos, especially when traveling outside urban centers.

  • Be prepared for seismic activity. Chile is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Learn basic earthquake safety and follow any local guidance during your stay.
