Travel Protection for Bali

Bali captivates travelers with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Tourists visiting Indonesia's "Island of the Gods" typically arrive at the Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as the Denpasar International Airport. Located in Tuban — a popular tourist area near Kuta — this airport sits 8 miles south of the island's largest city, Denpasar, and 22 miles southwest of Ubud. Travelers typically travel by taxi or private transportation to destinations like Denpasar, Ubud, Kuta and Seminyak.

In Ubud — the spiritual and cultural heart of the island — you might explore the 9th-century sanctuary of Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), featuring intricate stone carvings and a meditation cave. In the evenings, head to the city to watch traditional Balinese dance performances like the Legong dance at the Ubud Palace, where dancers in elaborate costumes enact stories from the Hindu epics.

Nature lovers can view the cascading emerald-green rice paddies that utilize Bali's ancient Subak irrigation system at the Tegalalang Rice Terraces. Adventure seekers head to Mount Batur to hike through the forest and over the peaks to view the breathtaking sunrises from the summit. Beneath Bali's beautiful waters, snorkelers and divers can discover vibrant coral reefs in areas like Amed and Nusa Penida. Diverse marine life, like manta rays and sea turtles, await in these waters for a rewarding aquatic experience.

While Bali offers unforgettable experiences, travelers should also prepare for unforeseen events. Activities like hiking and diving carry inherent risks, and travel protection can help with medical emergencies, not to mention trip cancellations and lost belongings. Securing trusted travel protection lets you fully immerse yourself in Bali's wonders with peace of mind, knowing you're supported against the unexpected.

Traveling to Bali: What Do You Need?

Embarking to Indonesia generally and Bali specifically requires you to carefully prepare beforehand. Compliance with entry regulations means understanding the requirements for your passport and visa, ensuring a seamless travel experience. Here's what you need to know before you start planning your trip.

Passport

Having a passport isn't enough for a trip to Bali — it needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date. If you don't meet this requirement, the island can deny you entry. You must also have at least two blank pages for visa and entry/exit stamps. Also, you must have a damage-free passport to prevent travel disruptions, so make sure yours is in good condition before you board your plane. If you plan on taking your kids along, children visiting with their parents must possess their own individual passports, as Indonesia doesn't accept minors traveling on their parents' passports.

Visa

Indonesia offers several visa options based on your nationality, the purpose of your visit and the length of your stay. Citizens of ASEAN member countries can enter Indonesia for a 30-day, non-extendable stay without a visa. Additionally, citizens of Hong Kong, Timor-Leste, and Colombia are eligible for visa-free entry under Indonesia’s broader exemption list for up to 30 days. You can verify whether you qualify for visa-free entry by visiting the Indonesia immigration website. Also, those who hold an APEC Business Travel Card, including citizens of Australia, New Zealand and China, may travel to Indonesia without a visa for business trips that last up to 60 days.

If you don't qualify for visa-free entry, you may be eligible for a Visa on Arrival, available to citizens of 89 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom and European Union member countries. These permits let you stay for up to 30 days, and you can extend the VOA for up to 30 additional days if necessary. Costs for a VOA run roughly $35, and you can obtain an application at designated ports of entry, including Bali. Requirements for a VOA include a valid passport, a return or onward ticket and proof you have sufficient funds. You can also apply online before your visit by using Indonesia's official visa website.

Do You Need Travel Protection for Bali?

Whether you're traveling for relaxation or adventure, a trip to Bali checks off all the right boxes. However, preparing for unforeseen events that could disrupt your trip makes sense, even though visiting the Indonesian island doesn't require you to have travel protection. Investing in trusted travel protection helps provide added peace of mind so that you can fully enjoy your time in Bali without unexpected setbacks. This coverage can help protect your health and overall travel experience, no matter if you're lounging on the beaches of Kuta, hiking Mount Batur or exploring Ubud's many cultural treasures.

Coverage for Medical Emergencies

If you're going to Bali for surfing, diving and hiking, these exciting activities have their own risks. Travel protection with Medical and Dental coverage helps protect you from the high costs of health care or evacuation from the island due to accidents or illness during your explorations. For instance, travel protection can help cover treatment in Balinese hospitals and clinics and handle medical evacuation in severe cases where local facilities can't adequately help. Consider Sporting Equipment coverage with our Preferred and Premium plan if you're engaged in higher-risk activities during your visit, including scuba diving, surfing and trekking.

Coverage for Travel Delays and Cancellations

Delays and cancellations can occur unexpectedly for numerous reasons, such as weather, airline issues or personal emergencies. A travel protection plan can offer financial protection against these events. Look for plans that helps reimburse you for canceled flights or missed connections and help cover unexpected hotel stays due to delays. Also, choose travel protection that helps reimburse you for prepaid tours, activities and accommodations should something happen that prevents you from completing your trip.

Additional Support and Assistance

Beyond financial coverage, the right travel protection provides valuable assistance to help during your trip. Good plans help cover lost and stolen belongings, including luggage, passports and personal possessions. They also offer 24/7 Assistance via a helpline when you need emergency support, such as help finding medical care or rescheduling your travel plans. You might also want a plan that includes coverage for natural disasters due to Bali's tropical location and potential for volcanic activity.

Bali Travel Tips

Bali offers travelers numerous unique cultural experiences and a beautiful setting for rest and relaxation, but trips here aren't without their quirks. Use these tips to make your trip to Bali a happier one so you can enjoy an unforgettable island getaway.

  • Carry a sarong for temple visits. Modest dress is required for visits to Bali's temples, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. Many provide a sarong and sash, but carrying one of your own ensures you're always prepared.

  • Beware of monkey mischief. Monkeys in places like the Ubud Monkey Forest and Uluwatu Temple often grab loose items like sunglasses, phones and hats. Prepare for visits by securing your belongings to avoid teasing the animals.

  • Avoid Food poisoning. Bali’s cuisine is delicious, but unfamiliar ingredients or water can upset sensitive stomachs.  Be cautious with street food and always stay hydrated with bottled water.

Whether you're exploring Ubud's serene attractions, diving into the vibrant underwater world along Bali's coast or sunning yourself on the tranquil beaches of Nusa Penida, trips to the island promise experiences you won't forget. Unexpected situations, however, can put a damper on your plans, from medical emergencies to lost belongings and travel delays. Having reliable travel protection lets you focus on creating memories. With coverage tailored to your plans, you can immerse yourself in Bali's unique setting with Generali Global Assistance.
