Summary: Baggage loss, theft, damage, and delay coverage is explained, including what protections travelers may receive, how to document issues, and how to file claims under Generali Global Assistance travel protection plans.

Lost luggage can derail even the best-planned trip, leaving you without necessities and facing unexpected expenses. Baggage loss protection helps provide financial reimbursement when airlines lose, delay, or damage your checked or carry-on bags, helping you replace necessary items and continue your journey with minimal disruption.

What Our Coverage Includes

Baggage loss protection is an essential part of a travel protection plan that helps reimburse you for lost, delayed, or damaged luggage during your trip. While airlines provide limited compensation—typically $4,700 maximum for domestic flights under Department of Transportation regulations—their coverage often falls short of replacing valuable items or covering extended delays. Travel protection may help fill these gaps with broader protection and clearer claims processes.

1. Loss of Luggage

Lost luggage coverage applies when an airline permanently loses your checked bags. Airlines typically declare a bag officially lost five and fourteen days after the flight, but this can vary from one airline to another. Until that time, your bag is considered delayed.

Our Baggage coverage helps reimburses you for the contents of your suitcase up to the plan limits outlined in your plan. This includes clothing, toiletries, medications, and other personal items you packed. Our plans offer coverage between $1,000 and $2,000 for baggage loss, with specific limits detailed in your Plan documents. We recommend reviewing your Plan documents before you travel and purchasing additional coverage if you are bringing valuable items and believe extra travel protection could offer peace of mind.

2. Reimbursement for Delayed Luggage

Delayed luggage occurs when your bags don't arrive with you at your destination but are expected to be returned. Our Baggage Delay coverage activates after your luggage has been delayed for 12 hours or more, though this varies by Plan.

When your bags are delayed beyond this threshold, you can purchase items you need immediately*—toiletries, medication, and a change of clothes. Plans cover $200 to $500 for these emergency purchases with each different plan providing different levels of reimbursement. You'll need to keep all receipts for these purchases to submit with your claim. Based on our three decades of handling travel claims, we've found that travelers who document purchases immediately and report delays promptly have faster claim processing.

3. Baggage Damage Claim Protection

Baggage coverage helps protect you when airlines or other carriers damage your luggage or its contents during handling. This includes torn bags, broken zippers, crushed items, or damaged wheels and handles. The coverage may help reimburse you for repair costs or replacement value if the damage cannot be repaired.

To file a baggage damage claim, report the damage to the airline before leaving the airport and obtain written documentation. Photograph the damage immediately and keep all original receipts or proof of purchase for damaged items. We cannot cover normal wear and tear, cosmetic damage that doesn't affect functionality, or damage to fragile items packed in checked luggage without proper protective packaging.

How To Handle Lost, Delayed, or Damaged Baggage

1. Notify the Airline Immediately

Report any baggage issues to the airline before leaving the airport. Visit the airline's baggage service office to file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) for lost or delayed bags, or a damage claim for broken luggage. Request a copy of the report and note the reference number—you'll need this for your claim.

2. Document Everything

Keep your baggage claim tickets, boarding passes, and the PIR from the airline. For damaged luggage, take clear photos showing all damage. If you purchase necessary items due to delayed baggage, save all receipts. This documentation allows us to process your claim quickly and accurately.

3. File a Travel Protection Baggage Loss Claim

Contact our claims team within 90 days of the incident We will not reduce or deny a claim if it was not reasonably possible to give us written proof of loss within the time allowed. In any event, you must give us written proof of loss within twelve (12) months after the date the loss occurs unless you are medically or legally incapacitated.

You'll need your Plan number, documentation from the airline, receipts for emergency purchases, and a detailed list of items in your lost luggage with estimated values. Our experienced claims specialists will guide you through each step and answer any questions about your specific situation.

4. Track Reimbursement and Follow Up

Monitor your claim status through our customer portal or by contacting our 24/7 support team. Most straightforward claims are processed within 10 to 15 business days. If the airline provides compensation, we'll work with you to coordinate benefits so you receive the full coverage up to the plan limit available under your Plan without duplicate payments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baggage Loss Protection

Do I Need Receipts for Every Item in My Suitcase?

While original receipts strengthen your claim, we accept alternative proof of ownership, including credit card statements, photos of items, or reasonable estimates for common personal items like clothing and toiletries.

Does Baggage Protection Cover Electronics or Jewelry?

Electronics and jewelry are covered under your policy and should be included in your claim with proof of purchase. For more tips on protecting valuables, read our guide on preventing stolen bags.

How Long Do I Wait Before My Bag Is Considered Lost?

Most airlines consider a bag officially lost after 5 to 14 days. Your bag is classified as delayed until this timeframe passes. You can file a Baggage Delay claim immediately if your bag meets the delay threshold stated in your Plan, then convert it to a lost luggage claim if your bag isn't recovered within the airline's designated period.
