Travel Insurance Questions and Answers

1. Which travel insurance plan is the best?

The Premium plan is the best travel insurance plan we offer—designed for more expensive vacations, especially trips abroad, cruises and tours. It features the highest available benefit limits to help protect your vacation investment, and with amplified coverage for emergencies on your trip, you can travel the world with more peace of mind.

TopTenReviews.com sums it up: “Generali wins out among the best travel insurance companies for its happy combination of below average fees for above average travel cover.”

2. What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a bundle of insurance coverages to help protect you from unexpected problems before or during your trip. With our plans you can be reimbursed for covered trip cancellations, emergency medical costs while traveling, lost bags and much more. Ultimately, it’s meant to help you travel with more peace of mind so you can worry less and focus on enjoying your time.

3. What does travel insurance cover?

Travel insurance covers people so they can be reimbursed for certain events that often disrupt travel and cause extra expenses. Our travel insurance plans cover for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Travel Delay, Baggage, Medical emergencies and more.

Once of the most popular coverages is Trip Cancellation, which can reimburse you for unused, non-refundable, prepaid trip costs if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, such as sickness, involuntary job loss, flight cancellation due to adverse weather and more. Similarly, coverage for Trip Interruption can recoup your trip costs if you’re unable to continue your trip because of a covered reason—our plans also provide reimbursement for additional transportation costs to help you return home or rejoin your group.

Travel insurance provides coverage for other certain unexpected, out-of-pocket costs as well, such as meals and overnight lodging if your travel is delayed*, clothing and personal items if your baggage is delayed* and medical expenses if you get sick or injured during your trip.

4. How much does travel insurance cost?

The average travel insurance plan costs somewhere between 4-12% of your total trip cost. Actual travel insurance cost will vary depending on trip details. Get a quote to find the exact cost to insure your trip.

5. How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance works like most other insurance plans - If something happens during your trip and you need to use your travel insurance, you’ll need to file a claim to be reimbursed. We have a page that explains how to start a claim, a great resource for learning more about the claims process.

For example, if you cancel your trip for a covered reason, you would submit a claim to seek reimbursement for the trip costs you lost. Read about common reasons claims are denied to learn more about how travel insurance works.

Another important part of our travel protection plans is the Travel Support Services available 24/7. With one call, we can provide live help with almost any issue while you’re traveling.

6. Why do I need travel insurance?

You should purchase travel insurance if you are worried about losing money or needing help while on vacation. Travelers most often buy trip insurance when they’ve made nonrefundable trip purchases but are concerned something may come up to cause them to cancel their trip. Another common rationale for trip insurance is Medical and Dental Coverage.

But there are a host of other reasons you should get travel insurance, which can be specific to you or your trip plans.

7. What are pre-existing conditions for travel insurance?

Pre-existing medical conditions for travel insurance are generally considered to be known injuries or illnesses that a traveler has when they buy travel insurance, and events related to those medical issues are often excluded from the travel insurance coverage.

When you buy a Generali travel insurance plan, Pre-existing Medical Conditions are defined as a Sickness or Injury during the 180-day period immediately prior to your effective date for which you or your Traveling Companion: (1) received, or received a recommendation for, a diagnostic test, examination, or medical treatment; or (2) took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine. Item 2 of this definition does not apply to a condition which is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription drugs or medicine and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or change in the required prescription throughout the 180-day period before coverage is effective under this Policy.

If you purchase our Premium plan you can qualify for coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, as long as the travel protection plan is purchased prior to or within 24 hours of your final trip payment, you are medically able to travel at the time the plan is purchased, and all prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions have been insured.

8. What does travel insurance not cover?

Most travel insurance plans, including those from Generali, won’t cover things like:

  • Reasonably foreseeable events
  • Known storms, epidemics, acts of war
  • Travel restrictions imposed by government authorities
  • Pre-existing conditions, if the policy is bought outside of the window for coverage
  • Dangerous activities

See our page all about what is NOT covered

If you’re worried about getting money back if you need to cancel your trip and don’t want to think about what’s covered and what’s not, consider adding Cancel for Any Reason to your plan.

9. What is travel protection?

A travel protection plan is composed of travel insurance coverages and travel assistance services packaged together. Travel protection can be considered a more comprehensive travel solution than insurance or services would be apart from each other. The insurance part of the plan is what pays you back if you cancel a trip due to a covered reason or lose your bag during travel, and the services are the part that helps you when you need assistance on your trip.

We offer three travel protection plans for every type of trip.

10. When to buy travel insurance?

We suggest you buy a travel insurance plan when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you have a long coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip. Later on, you can add coverage to the same plan for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs as long as you have not left for your trip, or filed a claim.

Is it too late to buy?

Generali travel insurance plans can be purchased up to 18 months before the trip departure date and up until the day prior to departure.
